Maternity gown photoshoot: flowing trains and tulle
The gown with a train is the maternity photograph most mothers picture first. Fitted at the bump, loose below it, with fabric that moves when you do. These are our gown sessions, newest first.
Some of the outfits in these photographs belong to our clients and may not be available to hire. We cannot tell at a glance which ones, so if you see something you love, send us a screenshot on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether it is in the studio wardrobe.
The gowns, and how we shoot them
What makes a gown ethereal. Three things: a fitted bodice so the bump reads clearly, a skirt that falls away from the body, and a train or sheer layer that can be thrown and photographed mid-air. The frames on this page where fabric floats behind the mother are not luck. Someone lifts the train and lets it go, and Anega shoots the half second it is in the air. Usually that someone is your husband, or your mother, or whoever came with you. It is the part of the session families talk about afterwards, and it takes a dozen tries to get one frame.
Colours that move well. Reds and maroons photograph with the most drama against our grey and white backdrops. Blush, lilac and pale blue are softer and suit the sheer-curtain backdrop. White and ivory gowns are the quietest and often the ones mothers come back to. The wardrobe holds gowns in all of these colours, and you try them on at the consultation. Some of the gowns in the photographs here belong to clients, so send us a screenshot of the one you love and we will tell you whether it can be hired.
Tulle, chiffon and mermaid hems. Tulle gives volume and a sense of occasion. Chiffon and sheer trains give movement. Mermaid hems hold the shape of the bump and the hips and then flare, which photographs well full-length. If you are choosing one gown for one dress, we usually suggest a sheer-train mermaid in a strong colour, because it gives both still and moving frames.
Bring, or borrow. Bring your own gown if you have one; solid colours and anything without a tight waistband photograph best. Or hire from the wardrobe, though some outfits in these photographs belong to clients and are not available to hire. Most mothers hire at least one, because the gowns are cut for 32 to 35 weeks and chosen to photograph well, which is not always the same as looking good in a shop.
Shoes, or none. Bare feet work beautifully with a gown and a train. If you want heels, choose a manageable height and try them on beforehand; balance and foot size both change in pregnancy.
Where the gown goes. A gown is one dress. It pairs well with a black fitted dress for a second, or with a saree. The sheer-curtain and white backdrops suit soft colours; the grey and slate backdrops suit red, maroon and blue. We decide all of this with you at the consultation, from this gallery.
How do you get the fabric to fly like that?
Someone throws it, every time, and we like that someone to be your husband or whoever came with you. The frames here are the best of many takes. You do nothing except stand still and look where Anega asks.
Will the gown fit at 35 weeks?
The wardrobe gowns are chosen to fit comfortably at 32 to 35 weeks and come in a range of sizes. You try them on at the consultation, usually a few weeks before, and we allow for growth.
Can my husband be in the gown frames?
Yes. The flying-fabric frames are usually solo, but the still frames with the train arranged on the floor work beautifully as couple photographs, and you will see both on this page. ---
