Blacks

About black

The same dress, three photographs. Black takes the light off the body and keeps the shape, and what it does depends on the backdrop. Against white it becomes an outline, which is why the silhouettes live here. Against a light grey it is a soft, clean shape. Against dark grey it nearly disappears, apart from the edge where the light skims it. You can see all three on this page.

Beyond a plain dress. The gowns here are fitted jersey, beaded, sequinned and velvet, with a ruffle train, a high slit, a hat or a leather jacket added in some frames. A partner appears in about a third of the frames, in black or white.

Texture matters more than colour. Black hides nothing about the fabric. A matte jersey is clean, sequin throws light, and velvet takes it in. Choose the fabric for the mood you want, and try two or three at the consultation.

Where black goes casual. Three frames pair a black fitted top with blue jeans and a black leather jacket, and a few add a wide-brim hat. Black is the one colour that moves from formal to relaxed without changing character. In the couple frames, a black gown beside a white shirt is the combination that appears most.

Is black too plain?

Not in a gallery like this one. The same colour, in different fabrics and against different backdrops, gives frames that are nothing alike.

Will black look heavy against a dark backdrop?

It can, so for a black gown we tend to choose a white or light grey backdrop, which lifts the whole frame. ---
