Maternity bump and silhouette portraits
This is the look that is about the curve and nothing else: the bump in profile, the hands on it, the outline lit from behind. Mostly black gowns, mostly black and white, the newest first.
Some of the outfits in these photographs belong to our clients and may not be available to hire. We cannot tell at a glance which ones, so if you see something you love, send us a screenshot on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether it is in the studio wardrobe.
Photographing the curve
Profile first. The shape of a pregnancy reads best from the side. Chin lifted, one hand under the bump and one at the hip, the line from the throat to the knee is the whole picture. Almost every frame here is built on that line, in a fitted gown that gives it no competition.
How a silhouette is made. We light you from behind against a white backdrop, so your outline is dark against bright and the detail falls away. What remains is shape. About two in five of the frames on this page are silhouettes. For a couple, the outlines meet: foreheads touching, a kiss at the temple, his hands over yours.
Why the gown is nearly always black. Against white, a black gown becomes part of the outline, and against a darker grey it takes light along its edge and nothing else. Either way the gown disappears and the bump stays. A few frames use red, white or blue; the black ones are the purest version of the look.
Hair counts. In a silhouette your hair is part of the outline. Hair up in a ponytail or a low bun reads as a clean shape, while loose hair softens it. Decide with your make-up artist beforehand, and send us a photograph if you are unsure.
Special lighting. A few frames here use light as the subject: a circle of white behind you with your shadow on the wall, a red heart, pink and blue colour in the light, a palm-leaf shadow. They are made at the studio and tend to be chosen by mothers who want something that nobody else has.
Timing. Around 32 to 34 weeks the bump is at its fullest and roundest, which is when fitted and sculpted silhouettes photograph best. If you have ever wanted the classic, form-fitting maternity image, this is the window to take it in. If you are later than that, tell us how you are feeling and we plan the session around it.
The white block. A low white block lets you sit with your back arched and the gown pooled at the base, or lean on it with one hand while the other holds the bump. About a fifth of the frames on this page use one, mostly the silhouettes. It gives a line the body alone cannot make.
Colour or black and white. More than half of these are black and white, and many exist in both. In colour you see skin and the red, white or blue accents; in black and white it is pure shape. The choice is made frame by frame, after the session.
Do I have to be bare for a silhouette?
No. Most of the silhouettes on this page are in a fitted black dress. Only the outline is visible, so what you wear is your choice.
Will my face be visible?
In a silhouette it is optional. You can be in profile, so the line of the nose and chin is part of the outline, or turned away entirely.
Can my husband be in one?
Yes, and a good share of the silhouettes here are couples. Tell us during onboarding and we will plan the pose so the two outlines read clearly. ---
