Statement maternity looks: slits, hats and feathers
Most maternity photographs are soft. These are not. A high slit, a wide-brim hat, feather at the hem, a train of black ruffles: gowns and pieces that say something before you have struck a pose. The newest first.
Some of the outfits in these photographs belong to our clients and may not be available to hire. We cannot tell at a glance which ones, so if you see something you love, send us a screenshot on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether it is in the studio wardrobe.
Photographing a statement
One strong thing. A statement look works when one element does the talking. On this page that element is a high slit with heels, a wide-brim hat in black felt or cream straw, a train of ruffles, feather at the neckline or the hem, or a halter drape knotted at the throat. Everything else in the frame stays simple.
Mostly black, then blue. Black is the largest group here, with royal blue the second. A few are red or white. A strong colour keeps the focus on the shape, and black or blue against a pale backdrop gives the look its edge.
Plain backdrops. The majority were made against white, light grey or medium grey. When the gown or the hat is the statement, the backdrop should say nothing.
Posing for it. The poses are taller and more angular than the soft looks: hand on hip, chin lifted, a leg out through the slit, shoulders turned. Many frames use a stool or a white block, so the gown can fall around you. You will not need to practise. Anega shows you the angle.
Heels. If you are comfortable in heels, choose a manageable height and try them on before the day; balance and foot size both change in pregnancy. Bare feet are fine for any of these looks.
Your own piece. A hat, gloves, a statement necklace or a fascinator can all be brought along as props, and we will use them if they suit the setup. Bring two options and we choose together. The studio has hats you can use. Some of the accessories and jewellery in these frames belong to clients, so please check with us before assuming a piece is available.
With a child. A few of the frames here include a young son or daughter at your hip or on a block beside you. A high-slit gown becomes warm very quickly when a child kisses your cheek. Children can be added to any dress.
Ruffles and capes. A black tiered ruffle train swept out behind you, in a few frames, is the most theatrical gown here. Sheer cape sleeves in maroon or red, falling to the floor, do something similar more quietly.
The hats. The hats on this page include a wide-brim black felt, a black hat with a cowboy brim, a cream straw hat as wide as your shoulders, and a plain black felt in profile. A hat changes the shape of the whole frame, so keep the gown fitted and the backdrop plain.
The most theatrical frame. Long black opera gloves, a veiled fascinator and a plunging black dress. It is the one frame in this gallery that is entirely about costume, and it works because nothing else is added.
Is a statement look too much for a maternity photograph?
It is exactly as much as you choose. The same gown can be photographed softly or sharply, and we decide the mood at the consultation, with these frames on the table.
Can I bring my own hat or jewellery?
Yes. Props are welcome: a hat, a necklace, a scan, baby shoes. We will use them if they suit the setup.
Do I need to be comfortable in heels?
Not at all. A heel adds length in a slit gown, but bare feet work beautifully with most looks here. ---
